Biographical Information

I was born into a deeply religious blue-collar family in Duisburg, Germany, during the time of the Cold War. Earning the high school diploma at age 25 as the first person in my family allowed me to start university in Germany as a non-traditional student and later earn my MA at Pitt and my doctorate at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. My US family consists of my husband Nick, born in the Philippines, a Henry Clay High school teacher, our daughter Leni, a senior engineering student at UK, and a Golden Doodle and Miniature Schnauzer. We are part of the St. Peter Claver Catholic Church in Lexington, and as a family, we enjoy daily workouts at the local YMCA, hiking, kayaking, cooking, and home renovation projects. Learning and teaching about other cultures and languages is my passion and love, and I was blessed to have opportunities to travel to dozens of countries as a tourist and professionally on behalf of the US Department of State.
