Biographical Information

I earned a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Inha University in Incheon of South Korea, a master’s degree in mathematics from Arizona State University in 1987 and a Ph.D. in math from ASU in 1994.  I taught for a short time at ASU and then moved to Marion, Indiana, in 1995, where I taught at Indiana Wesleyan University until the summer of 2001. I have been teaching at Asbury University since the fall of 2001. There is a good group of math and science students at Asbury.

I am interested in origami, classical guitar, and their connections to math, art and science. I love the simplicity and yet complex components of the arts of origami and music and their close ties to mathematical pattern.  Naturally, most of my professional talks are about mathematical connections of origami and of music.  I currently serve as chair of the KY-Mathematical Association of America and as president of the Kentucky chapter of Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association.  My main role in these professional organizations is to organize educational events and conferences to promote mathematics and sciences to all age groups.

Family

I am married with 2 daughters and 1 son: Ouree (Senior in High School), David (9th grader) and Nara (4th grader). My spouse (Namhee) is a music educator specializing in early childhood.

Ouree is an excellent student and envolved in lots of musical theatre activities at the moment.  David wants to be mathematician and is becoming a good golfer and have beaten me a few times already. Nara is a superb butterflier and competes in the KY-state A meets.
