Counseling Internship/Practicum Program

Important Dates

For Practicums/Internships starting in Fall 2025:

The application process for Fall 2025 practicum/internships has closed.  The Center for Counseling occasionally offers new practicum/internships in the Spring semester, based on Center need.  If you are interested in a Spring 2026 Practicum/Internship, please submit your application to counseling@asbury.edu.

Weekly Schedule

Practicum/intern counselors may complete either a 10 or 20 on-site hours per week placement at the Center for Counseling. We do ask all practicum/intern counselors for a minimum commitment of one academic year to ensure continuity of care for our clients. These hours include:

  • 5 hours (for the 10 on-site hours per week placement) or 12-14 hours (for the 20 on-site hours per week placement) of individual counseling, couples or group counseling
  • 1 hour of one-to-one or dyadic (two-to-one) supervision
  • 1 hour of group supervision and staffing (Fridays at 2 pm)
  • 1-2 hours of professional training in counseling and psychology (Fridays at 3 pm)
  • 1 or 2 hours for administrative purposes (i.e., paperwork, treatment planning, supervision, preparation, etc.)

It is expected that practicum/intern counselors will maintain regular weekly hours which could include early morning and/or late afternoon hours.

Application Process

Interested graduate students must submit the following materials by the application deadline :

  • letter of interest
  • statement affirming completion of required courses
  • copy of graduate school transcript (There is no need to pay for an official transcript – a copy from course planning documents or grade records is acceptable.)
  • résumé
  • names, phone numbers, and emails of two persons qualified to evaluate the student’s introductory clinical skills

If you have not completed all the required courses, we encourage you to submit your application and plan to take the courses concurrently.

Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an interview with the staff of the Center for Counseling. Up to six students will be invited to complete the practicum/internship program each year. View information on these important dates.

Candidates with previous counseling experience and those planning for careers in college counseling and higher education will be given priority.

Candidates must be willing to support the ethos of Asbury University, a private Christian liberal arts four-year institution. Candidates must allow a check of personal background through law enforcement agencies.

Program Requirements

Graduate students interested in this practicum/internship should have completed (or will have completed) coursework in counseling skills, models of psychotherapy, psychopathology, ethics, and assessment by the start of the practicum/internship. At times, practicum/intern counselors make arrangements to complete their courses concurrently with their practicum/internship.

Here are the recommended courses according to program of study:

  • Asbury Theological Seminary Students:
    CO601, CO655, CO610, CO622, CO715, CO720
    CO660 and CO680 are not mandatory, but beneficial
  • University of Kentucky Counseling Psychology Students:
    EDP605, EDP606, EDP630, EDP650, EDP652
  • University of Kentucky Clinical Psychology Students:
    PSY603, PSY610, PSY629, PSY636, PSY710
  • Students of other universities: Equivalent coursework covering counseling theory/techniques, processes/skills, ethics, assessments, and psychopathology

In addition, practicum/intern counselors must be available for a minimum of ten hours per week over two consecutive semesters (fall and spring OR spring and fall) and must abide by Asbury University’s calendar year and holiday schedule. It is expected that practicum/intern counselors will maintain regular weekly hours which could include early morning and/or late afternoon hours.

A mandatory orientation will be held the week prior to the start of the program. Hours are typically 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday of the week prior to the start of the semester.

Practicum/Intern counselors must uphold the legal and ethical standards of confidentiality and are not permitted to provide services to personal friends or family.

Asbury University is a Christian liberal arts undergraduate institution. Practicum/Intern counselors are expected to express a Christian faith and agree to uphold the ethos of the university.
