Welcome Weekend 2021

Asbury University’s Welcome Weekend gives new students a supportive, encouraging and informative transition to their Asbury experience. Each day is crafted intentionally with programs that empower students to take their first steps into the social, spiritual, and intellectual community here. Asbury’s fall Welcome Weekend is scheduled for Thursday, August 12 through Sunday, August 15, with one move-in date and schedule. We are excited to welcome you to campus!

Schedule

Thursday, August 12

8 a.m. – Noon Residential Student Check-In and Move-In — Residence Halls
Come to the welcome tent outside your residence hall to check in and receive your Welcome Weekend materials and room key.  Student leaders and campus community will assist with move-in.
8 a.m. – 4 p.m. HICCUP and HICCUP Too Open — Student Center and Kinlaw Library
Complimentary coffee is available at the HICCUP Too kiosk in the library, and specialty coffee, shakes, and smoothies are available for purchase at the HICCUP Cafe in the Student Center
8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Eagle Outlet & Campus Post Office Open — Hamann-Ray Science Building
Stop by the Eagle Outlet Student Store and Campus Post Office (CPO) at your convenience to get your CPO Box assignment and pick up some Asbury swag!
9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Financial Check-in: Student ID, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Campus Employment & Parking Stickers — Kinlaw Library, Lower Level
Take a break sometime during the day to complete this process.  REQUIRED for all students; parents strongly encouraged. Students, bring a government-issued photo ID.
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Complimentary Lunch — Johnson Dining Hall
New students and their families are invited to lunch as guests of the University
1 – 2:30 p.m. Commuter Student Check-in — Student Center
Come to the information desk in the middle of the Student Center to check in and pick up your Welcome Weekend materials, then proceed to Financial Check-in at Kinlaw Library (see above) 
2:30 – 3:45 p.m. President & Faculty Meet & Greet — Kinlaw Library, Main & Upper Levels
Students and their guests are invited to meet the President and faculty members while enjoying refreshments
4 – 5:15 p.m. President’s Welcome — Hughes Auditorium
Students and their guests are invited to this welcome service with a keynote address by President Kevin J. Brown
5:15 p.m. Transfer Student-Parent Farewell & TAG Group Connection — Reasoner Green
Sophomore & Junior Transfer Students (TAG Group 21) and their families are dismissed to Reasoner Green to say farewell,  then students connect with their TAG leaders for dinner
5:15 p.m. Freshman Class Photo & Freshman Student-Parent Farewell — Hughes Auditorium Steps & Semi-Circle Green
Freshmen and Freshman Transfer Students (TAG Groups 1-20) will line up on the steps of Hughes for their class photo. (Please wear your Ignited Class t-shirt!) Following the photo, students will say farewell to their families then connect with their TAG leaders for dinner and an activity.
5:45 – 8:30 p.m. Dinner with TAG Group & TAG Group Activity — Johnson Dining Hall
Following dinner with their TAG group, students will participate in a fun social activity
8:45 p.m. Residence Hall Meeting — Residence Halls
Mandatory meeting for students living in the residence halls

Friday, August 13

8 – 9 a.m. Breakfast — Johnson Dining Hall
8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Eagle Outlet & Campus Post Office Open — Hamann-Ray Science Building
Stop by the Eagle Outlet Student Store and Campus Post Office (CPO) at your convenience to get your CPO Box assignment and pick up some Asbury swag!
9 – 10:30 a.m. Language Placement Exam — Morrison & Hughes Classrooms
Taking a Language Placement Exam can be beneficial in advancing your academic progress in the Foundations requirements or majoring/minoring in a language, as well as saving you some tuition dollars. If you have previously studied one of the languages below,  you should take the exam.
     Spanish — Morrison 202 & 206 (Bennett-Bernard)
     French — Morrison 102 & 104
     Latin — Hughes 120
10:45 – 11:30 a.m. Liberal Arts Session with Faculty (Freshmen & Freshman Transfers) — Hughes Auditorium
Freshmen and Freshman Transfer students (TAG Groups 1-20) meet in Hughes Auditorium then go to their Liberal Arts Seminar (LA 100) classroom to hear from faculty about liberal arts learning at Asbury and the LA 100 course

Sophomore & Junior Transfer Student Class Advisor Meeting — Kinlaw Library Board Room
Sophomore and Junior Transfer students (TAG Group 21) meet the Courageous (sophomore) and Surrendered (junior) Class Advisors
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch — Johnson Dining Hall
12:45 – 1:30 p.m. Academic Orientation — Hughes Auditorium
Drop/Add dates, midterms, and academic policies are all important pieces of information you will learn about in Academic Orientation
1:30 – 3:15 p.m. Academic Advising — Various locations
Meet with a faculty advisor from your area of study for guidance on finalizing your class schedule. Locations will be announced at the end of Academic Orientation.
3:15 – 5 p.m. Campus Resources Tour — Meet at TAG Group meeting spot
Learn where to find, and get a brief introduction to, offices you will interact with — Wholeness & Wellness, Spiritual Life, Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, Center for Academic Excellence, Catalyst Center for Applied Learning and More!
5 – 6 p.m. Dinner — Johnson Dining Hall

Music Department Pizza Night — Student Center
For students interested in vocal/instrumental music opportunities who signed up in advance

6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Honors Program Ice Cream Social — Student Center
For students participating in the AU Honors Program
8 p.m. Worship on the Green — Reasoner Green (rain location: Hughes Auditorium)
9:15 – 10:15 p.m. Late Night Breakfast — Johnson Dining Hall

Saturday, August 14

8 – 9 a.m. Breakfast — Johnson Dining Hall
9 – 10:15 a.m. Student Life Welcome — Hughes Auditorium
Meet members of the Student Life team and learn more about the services they offer
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Part 1: Just Mercy — Hughes Auditorium
View part 1 of this film, which will be one of two films discussed in your LA 100: Liberal Arts Seminar class
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch — Johnson Dining Hall
12:45 – 1:45 p.m. University Assessments
Students will complete an important online assessment either in their room or in a computer lab.  Additional details will be provided prior to the event.
1:45 – 3 p.m. Refreshment Break — Student Center
Enjoy free drinks and snacks at the HICCUP cafe (coffee shop)
2 – 3 p.m. Community Standards & Safe Relationships at AU — Hughes Auditorium
(ONLY for students who did not participate via Zoom prior to arrival)
Complete your REQUIRED education session about Asbury’s community life standards and Title IX safe relationship policies so that our community will be not only safe but as holy, honoring and whole as possible
2 – 6 p.m. Textbook and Package Pickup — Hamann-Ray 101
Students who had textbooks or other packages shipped to campus may pick them up at the Campus Post Office package room
3 – 4:30 p.m. Part 2: Just Mercy — Hughes Auditorium
View part 2 of this film, which will be one of two films discussed in your LA 100: Liberal Arts Seminar class
4:30 p.m. Optional Classroom Schedule Tour
TAG leaders will give a tour of classroom locations so you can be prepared to find your classes on Monday
5 – 6 p.m. Dinner — Johnson Dining Hall
6 – 7:30 p.m. Equine Program Orientation — Meet at the circular drive between Kinlaw Library & Johnson Hall
Equine majors and minors will attend an orientation program at the Equine Center
8 p.m. Class Bash — Reasoner Green (rain location: Student Center)
All new and transfer students are invited!

Sunday, August 15

8 – 9 a.m. Breakfast — Johnson Dining Hall
Various times Worship at Local Churches
Meet at designated times/locations to walk or ride to local churches
Noon – 1 p.m. Lunch with TAG Group — Johnson Dining Hall
1 – 3:30 p.m. Free Time
3:30 – 5:15 p.m. Home Sweet Home — Meet at TAG Group meeting spot
Gather with your TAG group at a faculty or staff member’s home to become better acquainted with the Asbury community
5:30 – 7 p.m. Dinner — WGM Student Center
New students enjoy food, music, yard games, and more!
6:30 – 8 p.m. Honors Student Gathering — Home of Dr. Paul Nesselroade
Students in the AU Honors Program walk to the home of Dr. Paul Nesselroade, director (414 Akers Dr.) for the  AUHP Olympics (no athleticism required!)
8 – 11 p.m. Welcome Back Bash — Reasoner Green (rain location: Student Center)
Join with returning students to celebrate the beginning of a new year!

Thursday, August 19

4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Activities Fair & Picnic — Semi-Circle
Enjoy a picnic dinner and visit booths of campus clubs and community organizations to see the many ways you can get involved!
