Words from our Alumni

Samuel Askins“My name is Samuel Askins. I am retired from the U.S. Army where I served for seventeen years as an Airborne Infantryman. I suffered a traumatic brain injury from a vehicle bomb in Iraq and developed severe PTSD because of my trauma. I began the APS program for Leadership Ministry four and a half years ago. It was not easy juggling family, my disability, career and school. I had to drop a semester when the oil business crashed and for a moment believed, my college career had dissipated like the morning dew. I had given up and sent in my withdraw request. Immediately Dr. Kierstead and Dr. Fee were on the phone with me giving me encouragement and support. I dug in my heels and eventually finished my Bachelor of Science degree. Asbury University, and her faculty, has and continues to give me love and the encouragement I need to succeed. I am now the Director of Spiritual Fitness and Resiliency at The PTSD Foundation of America, helping other combat veterans find hope and healing through a Christ Centered recovery program. My hope is in Christ and many will come to know Him because of my education and will follow on to their own higher learning experience at Asbury University. Thank you Asbury and the APS team.”
