Chapel Attendance

University Chapel: Faith, Learning & Experience Program Attendance Policy

All full-time (12 credit hours/semester) TUG students are required to complete 32 Faith, Learning & Experience (FLEX) credits each semester. Of the 32 credits, 26 are required to be earned in Hughes Chapel at 10 a.m. M/W/F. The remaining 6 may be earned through other FLEX opportunities if desired.

Part-time Students

Students with less than 12 credit hours but more than 6 credit hours at the end of drop/add are required to complete 16 FLEX credits (at least 12 in Hughes Chapel 10 a.m. M/W/F, 16 total).

Students with 6 or less credit hours at the end of drop/add are encouraged to attend any FLEX events but are not required to complete FLEX credits. These students will be not be assigned a chapel seat but are welcome to sit in the guest section.

iAttended App for FLEX Attendance

Attendance is managed through the iAttended App. Any student with an Asbury email address can download and use the app. Students can find the app at this link: iAttended app. Students may also install the app from the iOS App Store or from Google Play for Android for their smartphone. Additionally, students may access the app on their computers at iAttendedApp.com. Traditional undergraduate students receive the login code to subscribe to Asbury’s FLEX program through their email. If you have not received the code, contact Chapel Attendance at ChapelAttendance@asbury.edu.  If a student does not have a smartphone, please contact ChapelAttendance@asbury.edu. Chapel attendance is taken in person in Hughes Chapel for these students.

Special Considerations

If a student has unavoidable commitments that overlap regularly (more than 5 times) with Hughes Chapel M/W/F 10 a.m., the student may  complete a Special Consideration Request for FLEX credit adjustment.

Examples of unavoidable commitments are:

  • Work that is scheduled over M/W/F 10 a.m. regularly (more than 5 times)
  • University-approved travel such as a field trip
  • University-sponsored events you are required to attend
  • Family responsibilities such as caring for one’s own children
  • Hospitalization
  • Multiple medical appointments
  • Or a combination of these

Please note: Athletes and students with an internship or practicum that requires exemption from chapel do not need to complete the Special Consideration Request. Instead, the coach or professor will communicate program commitments to chapelattendance@asbury.edu. In the rare situation that the student is an athlete with additional unavoidable commitments, the student may complete the Special Consideration request if desired.

Alternate Instruction (Online Chapel)

Students who are approved for alternate instruction by Health Services and the Registrar’s Office will complete FLEX credits by viewing Hughes Chapel services online and completing a paragraph response to the chapel. The response should demonstrate that the student listened to the entire chapel message. Paragraph responses are due 14 days after the return to campus date.  Please contact chapelattendance@asbury.edu for additional information.

Academic Accessibility Accommodations

Students approved through the Office of Academic Accessibility Resources for online chapel will complete FLEX credits by viewing Hughes Chapel services online and completing a paragraph response to the chapel. The response should demonstrate that the student listened to the entire chapel message.  Online chapel summaries are due per the following schedule:

  • Monday, October 16, 2023 for chapels occurring prior to Fall Break
  • Thursday, December 7, 2023 for chapels occurring after Fall Break
  • Monday, March 18, 2024 for chapels occurring prior to Spring Break
  • Monday, April 22, 2024 for chapels occurring after Spring Break

Assigned Seating

In order to receive FLEX credit for attending Chapel, you must both scan in via the iAttended app AND sit in your assigned seat.  Students who scan in but are not in their assigned seat will have their credit removed.  If you have a legitimate issue with your assigned seat, email chapelattendance@asbury.edu.

Student Conduct in University Chapel

Respectful, engaged University Chapel participation is expected. Inappropriate behavior (arriving late, leaving early, excessive phone use, laptop usage, studying, talking, food, disrespect) will result in a deduction of up to 1 FLEX credit. Students will be notified by email the first time they receive a deduction of a FLEX credit. Students are responsible to regularly check their iAttended app and monitor their credit totals, which may include deductions.

Unfinished FLEX Credits

Students who do not complete the required 32 FLEX credits (or adjusted equivalent) may be subject to Chapel Probation and/or Chapel Suspension. See the Chapel Probation page for additional information. Chapel Suspension means that the student will not be able to enroll in classes for a full semester.

See the detailed response for unfinished credits below. Questions may be directed to chapelattendance@asbury.edu.

28-31 credits:

Students who complete 28-31 credits have an opportunity to complete their credit requirement through community service prior to the beginning of the next semester. Students will be placed on Chapel Probation at the end of the current semester. However, if the required community service hours are received by the Office of University Chapel by the designated deadline, the student will be released from probation. See the Chapel Probation page for additional information.

20-27 credits:

Students who complete 20-27 credits are on Chapel Probation the following semester. Students may be on Chapel Probation for one semester only. More than one semester of Chapel Probation will most likely result in Chapel Suspension.

19 or less credits:

Students who complete 19 or less FLEX credits are almost certainly placed on Chapel Suspension for the following semester.

Graduating seniors:

In order to graduate and receive their diploma, seniors must have a passing grade in their final semester of Chapel. Graduates who have unfinished credits will complete 500-word essays for each credit unfinished before receiving their diploma. Contact chapelattendance@asbury.edu for your specific requirements.
