The federal government provides grants for students attending college. Most types of grants, unlike loans, are sources of financial aid that generally do not have to be repaid. Federal and state grants are available to those who complete the FAFSA and qualify on a need basis.
A Federal Pell Grant is an award to help undergraduate students pay for their education after high school. For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which aid from other federal and non-federal sources may be added. Eligibility for the Pell Grant is determined by completion of the FAFSA.
The FSEOG is for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need who are also Pell Grant recipients.
The TEACH Grant provides funding for students who agree to teach in a high-need field at a low-income school after graduation. In exchange, recipients must teach full-time for at least four years within eight years of completing their program.
TEACH Grant Requirement: This grant requires a teaching service commitment. If not fulfilled, it converts to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Interest is charged from the date the grant was disbursed.
Eligible students must complete the FAFSA, meet academic achievement requirements such as GPA or test score thresholds, and sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve. Students must also complete required TEACH Grant counseling and continue to meet eligibility requirements each year.
For education majors, the TEACH Grant may be combined with other programs, such as the Kentucky Teacher Scholarship, for students who qualify. This can help reduce out-of-pocket costs.
