Thompson Nets RSC Male Athlete Of The Year Honor

Trenton Thompson making a slam dunkMIDDLETOWN, Ohio –Asbury men’s basketball player Trenton Thompson ’18 garnered yet another honor after his stellar junior season for the Eagles.

Thompson was selected as the River States Conference Male Athlete of the Year, the league announced Friday. The award, voted on by the RSC athletic directors, is given yearly to the top male athlete in the conference regardless of sport.

The rising senior also earned NAIA All-America First Team, River States Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year and All-RSC First Team honors for his junior season.

The Cynthiana, Ky. native was one of the most prolific scorers in the country. He averaged 26.8 points per game, which was second in the nation. He scored in double digits all 29 games, recording 25 games with at least 20 points and 10 games with at least 30 points. He joined AU’s 1,000 Point Club when he scored 32 points in the Nov. 3 victory over Ohio-Lancaster and scored a career-high 40 points against Alice Lloyd on Feb. 1.

He made 53 percent (268-for-506) of his field-goal attempts, 41 percent (62-for152) of his 3-point attempts and 72 percent (178-for-248) of his free throw attempts.

Thompson also averaged a team-high 8.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game and recorded a double-double in nine games. He pulled down a career-high 16 boards in the Feb. 1 game vs. ALC.

AU finished the season with a 17-12 overall record, going 10-8 in the RSC and earning a spot in the conference tournament.
