Christopher Parkening visits Asbury UniversityWILMORE, Ky. — Asbury University will host Christopher Parkening, ranked as one of the world’s pre-eminent virtuosos of the classical guitar, as a guest for one of the University’s annual Artist Series events on Sept. 5.

Parkening will give the Chapel message in front of the Asbury student body at 10 a.m. in the historic Hughes Auditorium, as well as teach an afternoon master class starting at 2 p.m. in the Akers Auditorium on the Asbury campus.

In addition, many from the community may enjoy the opening night of an excellent art exhibit at Asbury. The exhibit, on loan from the Bowden Collection, was created by the German Expressionist Otto Dix (1881-1969), is entitled Matthaüs Evangelium and shows in 33 lithographs many events in the Gospel of Matthew. The exhibit opens at 7:30 p.m. in the Kinlaw Library.

Parkening has more than 40 years of experience as a world-renowned guitarist, including performances at Carnegie Hall, the White House, the Grammy Awards, “The Tonight Show,” “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show” and many more. He is the recipient of two Grammy nominations in the categories of Best Classical Recording for “Parkening and the Guitar” and “The Pleasures of Their Company.”

Perhaps Parkening’s most notable quality is his strong commitment to the Christian faith. Asbury’s Artist Series Chair Dr. Don Zent referred to him as a “Christian gentlemen,” and thinks Parkening’s time at Asbury will “make a significant impact on our community for years to come.”

In 2006, Parkening expanded his passion for helping young artists by creating the Parkening International Guitar Competition. The competition has drawn artists from more than 20 countries and offers the largest prize purse of any guitar competition worldwide.

Parkening currently lives in Southern California with his wife and son and is a Distinguished Professor of Music at Pepperdine University.

Each event is free of charge and is open to the public.
