New major is set to begin in Fall 2024 and prepares students for high demand fields

April 3, 2024

Beginning in Fall 2024, Asbury University students will have the option to major in Computer Science within the Shaw School of Sciences, with new programming that emphasizes relevant technical skills for competitive and high demand fields combined with a robust liberal arts educational foundation.

“The launch of Computer Science is timely and relevant for our students,” said Dr. Cheryll Crowe ’03 Johnson, associate dean of the Shaw School of Sciences and the Department of Mathematics chair. “Coding and computing quickly is becoming an essential 21st century workplace skill across disciplines. Computer Science encourages problem-solving, analytical skills, and logical thinking while helping people develop teamwork and interpersonal skills, all of which are hallmarks of the Math Department mission at Asbury.”

The Computer Science major is designed to prepare students for careers in web development, database administration, information security, information technology and more. Students in this major can choose from concentrations in Engineering Mathematics, a holistic study of all aspects of computers also designed to prepare students to enter a master’s program in Computer Engineering or Computer Science Engineering; or Computational Mathematics, which blends computer science and applied mathematics to prepare graduates for careers like software development and logistics, civilian work with the military, graduate school in mathematics, or computer science related fields. The Shaw School of Sciences also will offer a Computer Science minor, offering an attainable pathway for students who may have a different specialization but need additional coding or programming skills to supplement their degrees.

Asbury’s Department of Mathematics also includes a rebooted Engineering Mathematics degree that prepares students with a B.A. degree to apply for a master’s program in Engineering in fields like Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering, Materials & Energy Science Engineering, and Bioengineering. Asbury University is certified by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) as a Universities & Colleges with Actuarial Programs – Introductory Curriculum (UCAP-IC) Recognition Tier.
