The Asbury University ChoraleThe Asbury University Chorale will join Centre College, the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra and the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra for two concerts featuring music from around the world at the Singletary Center for the Arts in Lexington, Ky. The concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 and at 3 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Part of the Lexington Philharmonic’s “Family” series, the concerts are called “Candy Cane Takes a Global Sleigh Ride” and are geared toward children and their families. Asbury’s Chorale will perform music from the film “Home Alone,” a medley of Christmas songs and a piece featuring lyrics in Zulu in honor of Nelson Mandela and F.W. De Klerk. Also on the program are the MadCap Puppets, McTeggert Irish Dancers and LEX 18 meteorologist Bill Meck.

The 39 students in the Chorale have been preparing for the event for several weeks, learning about performing with orchestral accompaniment along the way.

“The strings and horns will cover some of our sound, so we’ll have to be very careful about diction,” said Dr. Vicki Bell, Asbury professor of music theory and director of the Chorale. “Scott Terrell, the director of the Lexington Philharmonic, has already expressed his satisfaction with the Chorale’s preparation and has suggested we’ll be invited to participate in future events with the orchestra.”

More than 20 members of the Chorale will travel to Italy in May 2012 on a performance tour that will include singing a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, among other engagements.
