WILMORE, Ky. — Asbury College announces the hiring of Lee Rogers as the new baseball coach for the reinstatement of the program. Rogers becomes the eighth coach in Asbury’s history. The program will resume intercollegiate play in the spring of 2008, competing in the NAIA and NCCAA on the national level and as a member of the KIAC conference.

“I enjoy the challenge of a brand new program and feel that the central Kentucky area offers plenty of talented players to field a competitive team right at the start,” said Rogers when commenting about his hire at Asbury.

Rogers is familiar to the central Kentucky baseball community as an assistant coach on the high school and collegiate level as well as serving as head coach for Babe Ruth teams in Lexington.

Rogers leaves his assistant position at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School to coach Asbury. He had been an assistant at Dunbar since 2005 and another one-year stint in 2001. In between, he served as an assistant at Transylvania University from 2002-2004. Rogers played his high school baseball for Lafayette and collegiate baseball at the University of Kentucky, earning letters in each of his four seasons from 1977 to 1980. After his graduation from UK, he became an assistant coach with the Wildcats for the 1981 season. Rogers left coaching after his experience with UK to help run the family automotive business for over 20 years. He returned to coaching in the form of the Turfland Babe Ruth squad from 1998 to 2000 before his stints at Dunbar and Transylvania.

The Asbury College program began with the 1982 season and continued until the 2003 season.

“Lee’s hiring is important due to his connections in the local area baseball community, it can only help us to attract students who want a chance to play immediately and at a competitive level,” commented Asbury Athletic Director, Gary Kempf.

Rogers lives in Lexington with his wife, Beth, and two sons, Chris and Curtis.

This is Asbury’s third new hire for the 2006-2007 season having already added Mr. Richard Thompson as the cross- country coach and Mrs. Dorothy Kempf as the swimming and diving coach.
