Asbury Publications Win National Awards
Two magazines produced by Asbury University’s student newspaper, the Collegian, recently won platinum awards from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP).
AMCP is an international organization of creative professionals that hosts a competition that draws more than 6,000 entries each year. “The Squeeze” and “Vie,” each written, photographed and designed by Asbury students, competed in the Internal Magazine and Special Edition Magazine categories, respectively.
The good news came just days after Collegian staff members presented a session on newspaper design at the National College Media Convention in Chicago. More than 70 students, faculty and media advisors from schools around the country attended the session.
“It was quite an honor to be asked to present a session along with such high-profile media outlets such as The Chicago Tribune and The Associated Press at the downtown Chicago Sheraton,” said David Wheeler, assistant professor of journalism and faculty advisor for the Collegian.
The Collegian is no stranger to recognition and awards; last year, the paper collected 34 awards at the Kentucky Intercollegiate Press Association’s annual convention before snagging five national awards from the Society of News Design last spring. The Society of News Design awards led to the invitation to present at the National College Media Convention.
"Presenting at the conference was a great professional opportunity,” said Jane Brannen ’13, a member of the team that redesigned the Collegian during the 2011 summer break. “I got the chance to network with journalism students from other schools, learn from experts in the field and tell people what the Collegian has been up to. This conference really affirmed for me that our department is doing great things. From the redesign last year to the Olympics trip this summer, the journalism department is providing incredible opportunities for its students."
