HyFlex

Last updated: 8/14/20 3:58pm

A HyFlex approach does not amount simply to Zooming lectures and class discussions, and otherwise treating the class as if it were a normal, in-seat experience. Rather, HyFlex learning allows us to accommodate at any given time:

1)    traditional in-seat learning

2)    synchronous remote learning

3)    fully asynchronous learning

It is more imperative than ever that we adjust our instructional practices to accommodate this range of possibilities. All our students will need mechanisms to continue their participation in our courses:

  • Students continuing studies from home.
  • Residential students who will need to be quarantined.
  • Classes large enough that only a portion of students can be in the classroom at once.
  • All of our students, if sent home as part of a state or nationwide campus closing initiative or if our own campus becomes a hot-spot.

We believe that the approach known as “HyFlex” (hybrid/flexible system of delivery) will enable us to respond to a variety of different scenarios. This approach combines traditional, in-seat instruction with participation in the course via Zoom (either synchronously or asynchronously); and course management through Discovery.

Prior to your courses:

  • Visit all of your classrooms to get a sense of the physical space in which you will be teaching.
  • Email your students no later than Aug.10 using the Discovery platform introducing them to Discovery, as well as, some of the differences they will be encountering this semester.
  • Divide students across the week’s scheduled class days if the roster is above the room capacity.
  • Identify a Zoom Buddy per section prior to the course(s) beginning.
  • Students need to regularly log in to Discovery and monitor their @asbury.edu emails (Note: Students can sign up for text notifications of activity posted in Discovery.)

Visit our Help Sessions page for support in modifying your practices.
