Dr. Spann received his Ph.D. in American History from The Johns Hopkins University in 1995. His major area of interest was American Religious History, with other areas of study in the History of the Antebellum American South, Latin American History, and the History of Modern Germany. He also holds the Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary (1983) and the Bachelor of Arts degree from Asbury College (1978).
In addition to teaching classes in his areas of graduate study, Dr. Spann also teaches classes in Western Civilization, 19th-Century European History, Leadership in History, and various courses in U.S. History. He has taken students on study tours of the American West and Mexico.
Besides his teaching and academic work, Dr. Spann is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church and combines part-time pastoral ministry with an active ministry in speaking in churches, campmeetings, and pastor training seminars.
