Rev. Stu Smith – “Advancing the Great Commission”

January 24, 2014

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” – Matthew 28:18-20

In Matthew’s Gospel, we read that the Lord Jesus left us with the responsibility of going into all nations, and across all cultures, bearing witness to His love and His sacrifice.  Matthew 28:19 is called the Great Commission.   “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Inherent in this scripture is both the command to go and to make disciples wherever we do go.

You see, Jesus calls us and sends us out in the power of His Holy Spirit.  He directs us to be His witnesses in everything that we are about in our daily lives.  Elisabeth Elliott said:  “Next to the incarnation, I know of no more staggering and humbling truth than that a Sovereign God has ordained my participation in His mission in this world.”

What a wonder to know that God’s mission on this earth includes you—uniquely you—and it includes me.  Our lives can be filled with such purpose and meaning as we join with God in His mission for this world.
