Job Purpose:

Coaches at Asbury University (AU) are expected to not simply coach teams, but rather build programs. The guiding philosophy for coaches is to “Recruit, Disciple and Build.” Essential responsibilities are focused on the following areas: Discipleship, Recruiting, Pursuing Excellence, Servant Leadership and Administration.

Essential Functions:

• Instructing student athletes in cheerleading including teaching theory, techniques, and strategies of the team.
• Instructing student athletes in preparing their minds and bodies for optimum performance of the team including personal nutrition, physical fitness and overall physical, mental and spiritual health.
• Selection of team through a tryout process.  (This will include both men and women and the number of team members may vary from year to year, depending on the talent).
• Ensure that all Cheerleading team members understand the commitment that a team member must make if selected to be a member of the Asbury University team.
• Monitor the academic success of all team members.
• Exercise reasonable judgment in the stunts that team members are expected to perform.
• Enforce team member use of all appropriate safety equipment such as spotting belts, spotting harnesses, crash pads, etc., when learning new stunts and ensure continued use until both the student and coach feels confident that the student can perform the stunt.
• General administrative duties related to team functioning including:
  • Ensuring all equipment is properly stored, and the building is secure after all practices.
  • Picking up and returning vans before and after performances.
  • Loading and unloading team equipment for performances.
  • Ensure student drivers have filled out the necessary paperwork to be approved as drivers (juniors and seniors only).
  • Ensure availability of a first aid kit at each practice and performance and that check to see that it has the necessary supplies.
  • Inspect all equipment to ensure each piece is in safe, usable condition.
• Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  Majority of the work performed will be at the sports venue. Some work will be performed in an office environment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a part-time, stipend position, and hours of work and days vary according to practice and game schedule.  Depending on the season, work includes evenings and weekends.

Travel:

 Some travel is expected for this position.

Qualifications: 

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• 3-5 years minimum related coaching experience.
• A committed and dynamic Christian faith is vital along with the ability to support the University’s theological position, lifestyle standards and mission.
