Position Summary:

The Biology and Chemistry Lab Manager provides leadership, coordination, and oversight for instructional laboratory operations within the Department of Biology and Chemistry. The Lab Manager oversees laboratory preparation, compliance, safety protocols, and equipment. This role supports the university’s mission of academic excellence grounded in the Christian liberal arts tradition by ensuring safe, efficient, and quality laboratory experiences for students and faculty.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Operations & Instructional Support:

  • Prepare, organize, and set up laboratory materials, reagents, equipment, and demonstrations for undergraduate biology and chemistry courses
  • Coordinate laboratory schedules and ensure readiness for all lab sections
  • Maintain accurate inventories of chemicals, biological specimens, glassware, and equipment
  • Assist faculty in developing new laboratory experiments and updating existing protocols

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, and chemical hygiene standards)
  • Maintain and update the Chemical Hygiene Plan and laboratory safety manuals
  • Conduct safety training for faculty, staff, and student workers
  • Oversee proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological waste
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure proper labeling and documentation

Equipment & Facilities Management:

  • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
  • Collaborate with the Department of Biology and Chemistry Department Chair to order supplies and recommend equipment purchases, upgrades, and repairs
  • Ensure laboratory spaces are clean, organized, and functional

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or closely related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Knowledge of chemical safety, biological safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation
