Asbury University Revamps Communication Concentrations

Asbury’s School of Communication Arts is set to launch significant curriculum updates this fall, introducing two new concentrations aimed at aligning academic offerings with evolving industry demands.

Starting in the 2025–2026 academic year, the Communication major will feature:

  • Strategic Communication: This concentration merges the existing public relations and social media tracks, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of integrated communication strategies across various platforms.
  • Leadership and Global Communication: Combining the former leadership and international communication concentrations, this track focuses on preparing students for leadership roles in diverse, global contexts.

“We’ve refreshed our communication curriculum to launch students into meaningful careers and keep pace with the fast-moving world of media, storytelling, and connection—all with a Christ-centered foundation,” said Professor of Communication Dr. Jim Shores.

Communication majors can customize their concentrations through taking courses in Graphic Design, Social Media & Emerging Technology, Principles of Marketing, and more.

Through the +Grad Program, Asbury students can earn their Master of Arts in Communication (M.A.C.) in as few as 12 additional months upon graduating from Asbury University with an undergraduate degree, depending on their program of study. Students can customize their M.A.C. with elective course options in Viral Marketing, Global Communication, Cross-Platform Storytelling, and more.

Asbury Communication graduates continue to thrive in their professional and academic fields.

As the first graduate from Asbury’s M.A.C. program, Sydney Scheller ’24 is a Ph.D. in Media & Communication student at Texas Tech University, where she teaches undergraduate classes while pursuing her dream of becoming a professor someday.

“From 150 applicants, they chose ten of us to begin the program last fall,” Scheller said. “I was honored to be the first candidate the committee selected overall for the 2024 cohort. The Asbury Communication professors, especially Dr. Jim Shores and Dr. Todd Wold, have been supportive throughout the process. They were with me in Drinklings Coffee Shop as I pressed the submit button on my Ph.D. application.”

Scheller conducted research during her time at Asbury, beginning with a SEARCH Symposium project that expanded into a larger project with Dr. Elizabeth Jones (Director of Graduate Studies in Communication and Associate Professor) and Nathan Vick ’19. Scheller, Jones, and Vick published their findings as a book chapter titled, “#MarketingFaith: The Megachurch Pastor as Social Media Influencer” in Research Perspectives on Social Media Influencers and their Followers, edited by Dr. Brandi Watkins.

Asbury Communication faculty actively contribute to their research areas and share their perspectives on the This Is Asbury podcast, such as Dr. Kim Okesson’s episode:  “Communicating in a Globalized World.”

The Asbury University School of Communication Arts offers master’s degrees in communication and media (M.A.C. in Communication; M.A. in Digital Storytelling; M.A. in Instructional Design, Innovation & Leadership; MFA in Film/TV Production; and MFA in Screenwriting). Learn more: asbury.edu/graduate.
