Members of the Asbury Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) Chapter recently traveled to Lexington to connect with communication professionals and learn more about career opportunities within the industry. The experience provided students with firsthand exposure to public relations and communication work while allowing them to network with professionals from a variety of backgrounds.
The chapter visited Laub Media Group, a Lexington-based boutique media firm (led by co-owner and president Abby Laub) that specializes in photography, publishing, videography, writing, and strategic communication. During the visit, students participated in a question-and-answer session with communication professionals who shared their experiences, offered career advice, and discussed the importance of building professional relationships.
Students heard from Doug High, a veteran television news anchor with more than 30 years of experience in the industry, and Dan Koett, a recognized community influencer and award-winning marketing and communication executive with 25 years of experience. The discussion gave members a deeper understanding of how communication professionals collaborate across organizations and industries while providing firsthand exposure to both media and public relations work.
PRSSA Advisor Dr. Todd Wold emphasized the value of hearing from professionals working across multiple areas of the communication field.
It was such a delight for Asbury’s PRSSA students to hear from experienced communication pros from all angles of TV news media and PR."
“Doug High was a wealth of knowledge on the changes occurring in local TV and essential skills for communicators, and Dan Koett emphasized the importance of building strong relationships across local media by bringing them compelling stories and resources to make their jobs easier. Plus, getting to visit Laub Media Group’s working space made the discussion more concrete.”
For many students, the experience reinforced the value of networking and highlighted the many pathways available within the communication profession.
This trip gave our members a valuable opportunity to connect with professionals and gain firsthand insight into the communication industry."
“Seeing how interconnected the field is helped students better understand the importance of networking, relationship-building, and professional growth as they prepare for their future careers.”
The trip reflected PRSSA’s commitment to professional development and providing members with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.
