For Dr. Tolu Bewaji, teaching at Asbury University is about more than what happens in the classroom. It is an opportunity to journey alongside students, deepen relationships, and grow in faith within a Christ-centered community.
Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Bewaji now lives in Wilmore and is in her sixth year at Asbury, where she serves as an assistant professor in the Dayton School of Business. She holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration and invests in the Asbury community in a variety of ways, including serving with the Intercultural Development Committee and Honors Committee, participating in the Deese Grant, mentoring Dayton Scholars, and taking part in Bible studies.
Through her years at Asbury, Bewaji has also found opportunities to strengthen her own relationship with God.
We asked Dr. Bewaji to reflect on her experience at Asbury.
“Being at Asbury has grown my discipline in keeping the Sabbath. I also enjoy going to Chapel and taking that pause in the day to listen and be challenged by His word. There have been various circumstances over the past few years that have deepened my reliance on Him.”
For Bewaji, Asbury’s emphasis on faith provides opportunities not only to encourage students in their spiritual lives but also to continue growing personally in her walk with Christ.
“It is wonderful to journey with students over the years, since it is a small campus, and see how they grow in various ways over the years. I enjoy getting to deepen relationships with some of them.”
Asbury’s close-knit campus allows faculty members like Bewaji to know students beyond a single semester or course. Those relationships give her the opportunity to watch students develop academically, professionally, personally, and spiritually throughout their college experience.
“I enjoy cooking, baking, and spending time with my family.”
Whether she is teaching business students, mentoring DSB students, serving the campus community, or spending time with her family, Bewaji values relationships and opportunities to invest in others.
Her experience reflects an important part of Asbury’s approach to education: professors who bring their expertise into the classroom while intentionally walking alongside students as they grow in knowledge, faith, character, and calling.
