Meet Dr. Paul Sunderland: Equipping the Next Generation of Worship Leaders

Asbury’s Worship Arts Program Director shares his passion for worship, ministry, and preparing students to lead with excellence.

For Dr. Paul Sunderland, worship is more than music. It is a lifelong calling to help people encounter God and faithfully serve the Church. As Worship Arts Program Director and Associate Professor of Worship in Asbury University’s Christian Ministries Department, he is passionate about equipping students to lead worship with theological depth, musical excellence, and a heart for ministry.

Before joining Asbury, Dr. Sunderland served as a church worship leader and built a career centered on worship ministry and education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies, a Master’s in Music Education, and a Doctorate in Worship Studies.

Beyond the classroom, he remains actively involved with Worship Him at Midnight (WHAM), the Asbury Worship Collective, the Wesleyan Heritage Committee, and the Asbury Songwriting Forum, continuing to invest in the worship community both on and off campus.

We asked Dr. Sunderland to share about his Asbury experience and what excites him most about serving students.

What led you to work at Asbury?

“I have always admired Asbury’s focus on academic excellence and spiritual vitality. It seems like each and every alumnus you meet talks about the transformation that took place during their time at Asbury. I wanted to be part of a place like that.”

What do you love most about working with students?

“I love working with students as they grow in their calling and fit for ministry. I especially love watching God awaken in them a deep regard and love for people.”

What advice would you give to an incoming Asbury student?

“Be prepared to enter a new phase of your life, full of discoveries, friendships, and adventure!”

Outside of teaching, Dr. Sunderland enjoys meaningful conversations over coffee, reading, and playing the guitar. He and his family also share their home with two dogs, making life outside the classroom just as full as life within it.

Asbury continues to prepare students for faithful, innovative ministry, and Dr. Sunderland is excited to help shape that future. He also encourages prospective graduate students to explore Asbury’s Master of Arts in Ministry Innovation, a program designed to equip leaders for creative and effective ministry in today’s world.

Whether you’re discerning a call to worship ministry or looking to expand your impact through graduate study, Asbury offers a Christ-centered education that prepares you to serve wherever God leads.
