One of the aspects of mathematics and science that is fascinating to me is the way the disciplines reveal patterns and order within creation. A compelling example is the Fibonacci sequence, in which each number is the sum of the two preceding numbers.
As the sequence progresses, the ratio between consecutive numbers approaches the golden ratio, a proportion long associated with beauty, balance, and harmony.
What makes this relationship particularly remarkable is that it appears throughout the natural world. The Fibonacci sequence and golden ratio can be observed in flower petals, pinecones, sunflower seed arrangements, shell spirals, branching trees, and even in the structure of some galaxies.
These recurring patterns suggest that creation is not random but reflects an underlying order that invites exploration and understanding.
Mathematics and science equips students to pursue truth through careful observation, logical reasoning, and intellectual humility. In a Christian higher education setting, these disciplines can also deepen students’ appreciation for the Creator whose wisdom is evident in the world He has made.
The study of patterns encourages students to see connections between faith and learning, recognizing that the same God who reveals Himself through Scripture has also left evidence of His order and creativity throughout creation.

As students discover the elegance and consistency woven into the fabric of the universe, they are reminded of the truth expressed in Psalm 19: “The heavens declare the glory of God.” Through the sciences, students gain not only intellectual skills but also a deeper appreciation for the beauty, order, and majesty of God’s creation.
