Asbury University Earns Tree Campus Higher Education Recognition, Strengthening Commitment to Stewardship

Shaw School of Sciences leads campus-wide initiative to cultivate environmental responsibility and student engagement

Asbury University has been officially recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution, marking a significant milestone in the University’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability, and student engagement. The designation, awarded in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, highlights Asbury’s intentional investment in campus forestry and hands-on learning experiences.

The Shaw School of Sciences led the initiative, bringing together faculty, staff, and students in a collaborative effort to enhance and preserve the University’s natural landscape. Under the leadership of Dr. Marvin Ruffner, the project included strategic tree plantings across campus and in the Wilmore community, the development of a GIS-based tree inventory, and the installation of tree identification tags to support both education and long-term care.

Trees are symbolic throughout the Bible, and they are a significant gift of God’s creation which sustains life in many ways.”
Dr. Marvin Ruffner Asbury University Assistant Professor of Biology

“Humans are called to be creation stewards, and in my opinion, it is a significant way we all can honor and glorify God. I aim to bring light and awareness about the significance of trees, their benefits that sustain life for not only humans but to all life. I will continue to advocate and encourage others, especially the next generation, to be the best creation stewards possible. I am grateful for the support of the Asbury community and the Arbor Day Foundation.”

This recognition remains especially relevant for Asbury students because it connects academic study with tangible acts of stewardship, equipping graduates to care for creation while engaging their communities in meaningful, lasting ways.

Students played an active role throughout the process, participating in planting projects and learning proper tree care techniques that reinforce classroom instruction. These experiential opportunities ensure that students not only understand environmental principles but also apply them in real-world contexts that extend beyond graduation.

The initiative also secured a $5,000 Arbor Day Foundation Jumpstart stipend, which supported early program development and helped establish a strong foundation for future campus forestry efforts. Asbury’s designation reflects a broader institutional commitment to sustainability, aligning with its mission of academic excellence and spiritual vitality.

Asbury University celebrated this achievement during its upcoming Arbor Day event, inviting the campus community to reflect on the importance of caring for creation. The recognition positions Asbury as a leader among institutions that integrate environmental responsibility with student learning and community impact.
