Asbury University Launches New Online Learning & Behavior Disorders Degree to Address Critical Education Needs

Flexible, Christ-centered Asbury program certifies educators in a formative way

Asbury University’s School of Education has announced the launch of its fully online Bachelor of Science in Learning & Behavior Disorders (P–12), a program designed to equip students to meet the growing demand for skilled and compassionate special education teachers in Kentucky. The degree prepares graduates for certification in Special Education (P–12), opening pathways to meaningful careers serving students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.

We are thrilled to begin this innovative program that enables Asbury to play a meaningful role in addressing the need for certified special education teachers in our schools."
Dr. Sharon Bixler Asbury University Dean and Associate Professor in the School of Education

The online format allows working adults, teaching assistants, and aspiring educators to pursue their calling without disrupting their current responsibilities. Students engage in coursework that emphasizes evidence-based instructional strategies, individualized education program (IEP) development, and inclusive classroom practices. Faculty members, who bring extensive experience from public and private education, mentor students in both professional excellence and personal growth.

This program remains deeply relevant for Asbury students because it integrates faith, service, and practical training to meet a nationwide shortage of special education teachers while empowering graduates to make a lasting impact in students’ lives.

Asbury’s approach combines academic rigor with a Christ-centered mission, encouraging students to see teaching as both a profession and a calling. Graduates leave prepared not only to teach but also to advocate for students, collaborate with families, and lead within their schools and communities.

The program also emphasizes accessibility and value, offering eligibility for federal financial aid, Kentucky teacher grants, and other incentives that help reduce financial barriers. With a strong return on investment and high demand for certified special education teachers, graduates enter a field rich with opportunity and purpose.

Asbury’s supportive online environment ensures that students receive personalized attention while building a strong professional network.
