I have had a great experience at Asbury College these past three years. When I was first applying to colleges, I had no idea what I wanted to major in except that I wanted it to have something to do with math. When I heard about actuaries I decided I wanted to look into that more at college. It just happened that a new financial math major with an emphasis in actuarial science had just been created in the Asbury math department.
The math department at Asbury College is a great group of people. The professors are fun to be around and can maintain a light atmosphere inside and out of the classroom. Also, one-on-one help is not too hard to find. Being a math major at Asbury can be very challenging, but it is also very rewarding. I cannot imagine being anywhere else right now.

In some ways, I still can't believe I'm a math major. Up until my Junior year in high school, I absolutely hated math. But God works in mysterious ways, and now here I am one of the few women math majors at Asbury.
I thank God, that he led me here because the math department, faculty and students, have been so welcoming. It was very easy to adjust to college living since I already had a "family" of sorts built in already. The faculty are so helpful and truly care what is going on in our lives. I also got to know fellow math students very well with all of the time we spend together studying in Hamann-Ray, partying at First Friday, or just hanging out to watch Numb3ers at Dr. Coulliette's. I really believe that we are one of the tightest knit departments on campus, and I'm so glad to be a part of it.

Having talked to many non-math majors at Asbury, I have discovered a new appreciation for the community that we have. I was talking to a friend the other day and he said that he wished his department was as closely knit as the math department. This has come about through the amazing faculty and students that spend their time pondering Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, and Physics in the rumored 3rd floor of Hamman-Ray. Basically, the math department at Asbury is the way it is because we all know each other and we strive to have community.

My favorite aspect of the Asbury College Mathematics Department is the community. With the smaller classroom atmosphere and their commitment to investing in the students, it's impossible not to get to know the math professors if you are a part of their classes. Asbury's math professors go beyond simply being approachable and available for you to seek coursework help and major/career guidance. As one of their students they take an interest in your life--taking prayer requests in class and caring enough to ask how those requests have been answered, weeks after they were mentioned. Also, the department throws "First Friday", a casual dinner party every month where you can hang out with professors and students alike. The community of Asbury's mathematics department is an essential part of my education.

I really love the fact that the professors in my major treat me like I matter to them. They go out of their way to give me their time and full attention when I need them. Professors like that are important to have when one is looking for God’s will for one’s life. As my own plans have changed over the time that I have attended Asbury, my mathematics professors have been an integral part of my journey of discovering who I am in God’s plan.
