LEXINGTON, Ky. - Asbury University men’s lacrosse and current Paul Laurence Dunbar senior Brandon Smoot made a little history on Tuesday afternoon. Smoot became the state of Kentucky’s first signee for the Eagles who are set to begin competition for men’s and women’s lacrosse in the 2014-15 school year.
“Brandon and I first made contact back in July, I think it was, when I received his highlight video and had just started recruiting [here at Asbury],” head coach Josh Stewart said. “I knew right away that I wanted Brandon to become part of this program. He has the talent to be a very good player on the field for us and, after getting to know him a little more, he is the perfect fit for Asbury.”
Smoot, a defender on Dunbar’s lacrosse team, is the fourth signee for an athletic scholarhip for the men’s lacrosse program at Asbury. Stewart says Smoot will be a leader on and off the field for the Eagles next season.
“It feels great to be the first local player to sign,” Smoot said at the signing. “I’m so happy that I’m finally realizing my dream of playing college lacrosse and continuing my education. It’s a plus to get to do it at a Christian university like Asbury.”
“I’m truly honored to have Brandon become part of this team,” Stewart added. “He will be an anchor on our defensive unit and I’m excited to work with him for the next four years.”
Asbury’s lacrosse teams continue to take shape as they gear up for competition next season. With signees from California, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Virginia, and now Kentucky, the lacrosse program is poised to have a variety of talent from across the United States.
