"Nurturing Spiritual Vitality Where We Live"
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith." (Hebrews 12:1-2)
InReach Ministries is a unique student chaplaincy program that provides intentional pastoral care on each floor/unit/apartment within the Residence Halls. Known around campus as "Spiritual Life Coordinators" or "SLCs" and "Spiritual Life Assistants" or "SLAs", these forty five InReach Staff are committed to creating an environment for all to experience the fullness of God’s love and grow spiritually. These student staff members receive specialized training to assist them in fulfilling their ministry role among their peers.
The InReach Staff provide a consistent, weekly time for residents of each floor/unit/apartment to gather and find space to connect with God and one another. These weekly meetings are known as "Gather" where students do life together. SLA's foster a time of connection, prayer and sharing to allow hallmates to really get to know and care about those around them. In partnership with Residence Life Staff, the SLC's help coordinate opportunities for the entire Residence Hall to come together throughout each semester to focus on the Hall theme for the year, listen to fellow residents' testimonies, or to hear from guest speakers.
In all of these endeavors and throughout all of training, InReach Staff members seek to enhance the spiritual vitality of the campus through their own relationships to Jesus Christ and through relationships with others, no matter where they may find themselves on their spiritual journeys. With a particular emphasis on "holiness" as found in the rich tradition of Asbury University and spoken of through our own "cloud of witnesses" to this life of faith, InReach Staff members seek to help others identify any barriers to growth in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Over the last few years, InReach has focused on helping the students create space for God to move in their lives. We have implemented an emphasis on the classical spiritual disciplines, like simplicity, solitude and contemplative prayer. Intentionally exposing students to a variety of practices through which they can better recognize their ability to connect and hear from God through a relationship with Jesus. This, in turn, allows students to continue to discern God's as He reminds each one how much He truly loves us and wants to be in relationship with us.
InReach Ministries also works with the Spiritual Life Board of the Student Congress to coordinate our Discipleship Group program. Many students at Asbury participate in our small groups. Through this initiative small groups come together to seek God together in community. These groups can have a wide variety of focuses; bible student, reading group, accountability, issue related. Many of these groups are led by Asbury University staff and faculty, while some are led by local community members and other student leaders.
InReach Ministries verse: 2Corinthians 12: 9, 10
“But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
The InReach Staff is privileged to have the opportunity to interact with so many residents on campus and to journey alongside one another in this life of faith.
