Knowlton Foundation awards Asbury $100,000 for new endowed scholarship

January 21, 2022

The Austin E. Knowlton Foundation recently awarded Asbury University with a $100,000 gift to create a new endowed scholarship in the name of the foundation’s founder. Beginning in the fall of 2022, one scholar will be selected for a scholarship, with the priority being that the student is from Ohio and plans to pursue a STEM-related degree at Asbury.

“We are thrilled to establish this partnership with the Knowlton Foundation. And with their support, we can provide new scholarship opportunities to our students from Ohio who are interested in pursuing science and STEM,” said Asbury President Dr. Kevin Brown. “This coincides with Asbury’s state-of-the-art Collaborative Learning Center on schedule to open this fall. Together, these resources will provide a clear pathway for students to maximize and benefit from our academically excellent science program.”

The foundation’s primary mission is to promote and advance higher education in the United States through direct grants and contributions to qualified colleges and universities. It is the legacy of Austin E. Knowlton who was a community leader, entrepreneur and philanthropist. His construction company was responsible for more than 600 significant construction projects throughout Ohio and the Midwest, including school buildings, hospitals, libraries and post offices.

Knowlton established the Foundation in 1981 in recognition of his business success and civic involvement. He funded it during his lifetime and, through his will, created a lasting impact that continues to support students and higher education.
