BIO

Lisa Weaver Swartz joined the Asbury faculty in 2019. Lisa holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Notre Dame where she affiliated with the Center for the Study of Religion and Society and focused her early research on questions of religion and culture.

As a member of Asbury’s faculty, Lisa now serves as assistant professor and director of the sociology program. She teaches both foundations and upper-division sociology courses, mentors students, and serves on the advisory board for Asbury’s annual SEARCH scholarship event and competition.

Lisa also maintains an active research agenda that speaks to both sociological and religious audiences. Her first book, Stained Glass Ceilings: How Evangelicals Do Gender and Practice Power was published by Rutgers University Press in 2023 and named Book of the Year by New Testament Scholar Scot McKnight. Her current research is a grant-funded collaborative project charting the recent history of faith-based anti-human trafficking efforts in Southeast Asia. She is also working on a project exploring the social dimensions of Asbury University’s 2023 revival. Lisa is an active member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Religious Research Association.
