Spiritual Formation Team
Nurturing Spiritual Vitality Where We Live
The Spiritual Formation Team is a unique student chaplaincy program that provides intentional pastoral care on each floor/unit/apartment within the Residence Halls. Known around campus as “Spiritual Life Coordinators” or “SLCs” and “Spiritual Life Assistants” or “SLAs”, these thirty plus team members are committed to creating an environment for all to experience the fullness of God’s love and grow spiritually. These student staff members receive specialized training to assist them in fulfilling their ministry role among their peers.
The SLAs provide a consistent, weekly meeting as “Gather” for residents of each floor/unit/apartment and find space to connect with God and one another. Gather is a time of coming together for encouragement, prayer and studying the Word together.
In partnership with Residence Life Staff, the SLC’s help coordinate opportunities for the entire Residence Hall to come together throughout each semester to focus on the Hall theme for the year, listen to fellow residents’ testimonies or to hear from guest speakers.
In all of these endeavors and throughout all of training, the Spiritual Formation Team members seek to enhance the spiritual vitality of the campus through their own relationships to Jesus Christ and through relationships with others, no matter where they may find themselves on their spiritual journeys. With a particular emphasis on holiness as found in the rich tradition of Asbury University and spoken of through our own “cloud of witnesses” to this life of faith, SLCs and SLAs seek to help others identify any barriers to growth in their relationship with Jesus Christ.
The Spiritual Formation Team is privileged to interact with so many residents on campus and journey alongside one another in this life of faith. The SLC and SLA application process begins early in the spring semester for the following academic year.
