Demarion Johnson ’21

Community has been an essential part of the Asbury experience for Maysville, Ky. native Demarion Johnson ’21. Growing up, he was determined to go to a big state school, but after his high school music teacher, Charlie Hunter ’11, suggested he check out Asbury, it was community that sealed the deal.

“I came down and toured it and as soon as I stepped on campus, I knew it was where I was supposed to be,” said Johnson, a Communication major with an emphasis in Public Relations.

Johnson is active in campus leadership, currently serving as president of the Appointed Class of 2021 and as publicist for the Black Student Alliance.

Asbury’s tight-knit community has given him a space to grow and be challenged in his faith, but it’s also been a place of love and acceptance, and has strengthened his ability to relate and communicate with those who may hold different views.

“A lot of people help you have these tough conversations,” Johnson said. “Being immersed in that community has helped me carry these conversations back home.”

What makes the Asbury community special?

“I would say it’s where you can be yourself and love God and be accepted for that,” Johnson said. “The Asbury community is a place of belonging and inclusiveness.”
