The new credential strengthens Asbury University’s commitment to academic excellence and expands momentum for students preparing for careers in exercise science, human performance and health professions.

Asbury University Associate Professor and Department Chair of Exercise Science Dr. Elise Kearns recently earned certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), marking an important milestone for Kearns and the University’s growing Exercise Science program.

Kearns earned the credential as she leads Asbury’s Exercise Science program toward accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Strength and Conditioning Education (CASCE).

“Seeking accreditation solidifies our commitment to academic excellence by meeting the standards set forth by CASCE.”

Kearns’ national certification represents a significant step toward CASCE accreditation and strengthens Asbury’s commitment to preparing students for excellence in exercise science and human performance.

Dr. Cheryll Crowe ’03 Johnson, Dean of the Shaw School of Sciences, celebrated Kearns’ achievement and its significance for the department.

The accreditation effort builds on continued growth in Exercise Science. In fall 2025, Asbury launched a Pre-Athletic Training concentration within the Exercise Science major, offering students a 3+2 pathway in partnership with the University of Kentucky’s Master of Science in Athletic Training program. Students complete the equivalent of three years of specified coursework at Asbury before applying to UK’s program, creating the opportunity to earn both degrees in as little as five years. (Admission to UK’s graduate program is not guaranteed).

Kearns brings extensive academic and clinical experience to her leadership. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Sport Studies from Miami University in 2000, a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Kentucky in 2022. She also practiced pediatric physical therapy for 12 years and has taught at both Asbury University and the University of Kentucky.

Her research interests include physical activity levels in elementary schools, implementation science and the impact of physical activity on brain connectivity in children.

Through Kearns’ achievement, the pursuit of CASCE accreditation and expanding academic pathways, Asbury continues building opportunities that equip Exercise Science students for graduate education and meaningful careers in health, wellness and human performance.

The Asbury University Shaw School of Sciences includes five departments: Biology & Chemistry, Equine Studies, Exercise Science, Mathematics & Computer Science, and Nursing.
