Three recent scholarly publications from Asbury University faculty are advancing both scientific research and science education while providing students with meaningful opportunities to contribute to the field alongside their professors.
The Shaw School of Sciences is celebrating recent publications by Dr. Marvin Ruffner, professor of biology, and Dr. Laura Walther ’91, professor of chemistry, whose work reflects Asbury University’s commitment to integrating academic excellence, student mentorship, and Christ-centered scholarship.
Ruffner recently co-authored two peer-reviewed studies, both of which involved Asbury undergraduate students as active researchers. One study, published in the Journal of the Kentucky Academy of Science, examined effective methods for propagating northern spicebush, a native shrub commonly found in Kentucky forests.
Conducted entirely by undergraduate students as part of their senior research projects, the study identified refrigeration in moistened potting soil for 12 weeks as the most effective method for promoting seed germination, achieving a 75% germination rate.
His second publication investigated long-term strategies for managing invasive honeysuckle. Researchers found that removing the invasive shrub significantly reduced its abundance over six years, while adding native restoration plantings did not further reduce reinvasion compared to natural regeneration alone.
The publications demonstrate how Asbury students are contributing to peer-reviewed scientific research before they graduate, gaining valuable experience that prepares them for graduate study and professional careers.

Students involved in both projects also presented their findings at the Kentucky Academy of Science Annual Meeting, giving them valuable experience communicating scientific research to professional audiences.
Walther’s recent publication focuses on another area she is deeply passionate about: helping students better understand chemistry.
Published in the Journal of Chemical Education, “Bringing Chemical Kinetics to Life: A Week-Long Mini-Unit of Classroom Activities for High School Students” grew out of a master’s thesis project completed by chemistry education graduate Jesse Nugent. Together, they developed an engaging instructional unit designed to help high school students grasp chemical kinetics, a topic often considered one of the most challenging concepts in chemistry.
