Faculty and alumna from Asbury University shared research on the global impact of faith, media, and communication during the 2023 Outpouring.
On March 11, Asbury University’s Sydney Scheller ’24 and Dr. Todd Wold presented their research on the 2023 Asbury University Outpouring at the International Crisis & Risk Communication Conference (ICRCC) at Clemson University. Their presentation was titled: “When Revival Goes Viral: Examining Institutional Crisis and Risk Communication During Asbury University’s 2023 Outpouring.”
The ICRCC allows attendants to connect with crisis communication practitioners, leaders, and researchers. It was created with the intent to foster connections and discussions on crisis and risk communication. The conference offers a range of research studies, from theory to case studies of current crisis cases across the public and private sectors.
As researchers that are interested in churches and other faith organizations navigating crisis and change, we found the ICRCA to be very open to our work and gleaned useful insights from colleagues in response. The range of work being discussed broadened our perspective as well.”
Scheller was Asbury’s first graduate of the Master of Arts in Communication (M.A.C.) program and is currently completing her Ph.D. in Media & Communication at Texas Tech University. For this project, she collaborated with Wold, her former professor and mentor at Asbury.
Asbury students and alumni continue to conduct research with faculty members, both during and after graduation.
During Phase I, we explored the ways the University communicated with various stakeholders during the 16-day Outpouring.”
“Phase II of this project will look at news frames from both secular and religious news outlets, and Phase III will explore the social media response that spread news of the revival first in February 2023.”
