Asbury University Theatre to Perform “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”

Asbury Theatre Presents Classic Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical of Biblical Story

The Asbury University Theatre Program presents the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The show runs from April 10-18 in the Greathouse Theatre in Asbury’s Miller Center for Communication Arts.

This Asbury Theatre show puts a musical twist on the Old Testament story of Joseph from the book of Genesis. The show follows Joseph’s journey as he is sold into slavery by his brothers, is taken from Canaan to Egypt, becomes a high-ranking servant to Potiphar, is falsely imprisoned, interprets dreams, and ultimately becomes one of the most powerful men in all of Egypt.

AU Theatre major Rebekah Askey ‘26 directed the production as her senior project. For this production, Askey took a unique approach, making it a show within a show.

In this Asbury production, eleven college friends gather in an attic to tell Joseph's story, transforming everyday objects and costume pieces into a retelling that wrestles with whether God remains good when life falls apart.”

Askey gave insight into just how much work has gone into making this show come to life: “Hundreds of hours have been put into the show: from designing, to rehearsals, to construction. Hours of meetings, coordinating calendars, and sitting in my dorm room at 1:00 A.M. trying to figure out how we’re going to make this work.”

This show has pushed me as an actor in ways I haven’t been pushed before. I've needed to improve my spatial awareness, my dancing skills, my singing ability, and even grow in some gymnastics!”

“Joseph, a man who from God has been promised the moon and stars to worship him at his feet, experiences extremely tragic events,” deMena said. “In this conflict, we see Joseph wrestle in his relationship with God and His promises. Playing this character has helped me reflect and understand my own personal connection with the Lord. In portraying Joseph in God’s story, I feel like God helps me understand what he has planned for me.”

Asbury Theatre continues to prepare students for careers in theatre, offering hands-on experience in acting, stage management, costumes, set design, and more.

This Asbury show is great for all ages.
