Jim Owens
Professor
Who is he? A go-getter is one way to describe Owens, head of the Communication Arts department. From the time he was a freshman in high school, he's been a media maverick. He got his start in photography. While working for the Associated Press and Worldwide News Service, he photographed Presidents Ford, Carter and Reagan.
What’s he done? When teaching multi-camera television production, senior seminar, and television sports, Owens can draw on a long resume and lots of stories. His professional experience includes eight Olympic broadcasts, ABC Monday Night Football, NCAA basketball, and 22 years of Indy 500 broadcasts for ABC Sports. Owens has also been a producer for the Goodwill Games, ESPN2 and SportsChannel and has been instrumental in involving Asbury students in significant media events.
Owens has authored two textbooks on television production. Owens has served as the national manager of training for the Broadcast Training Program since the 2002 Winter Olympics, paving the way for Asburians to work at the games.
Outside of class? Owens, his wife Lynn, and his daughter, Sarah, often open up their home to students. Some of his hobbies include media lapel pin collecting (the count is past 5,000), camping, and boating.
