Asbury College hosts POPS in Hughes

By Heidi Heater, a senior from Jackson, Ky.

WILMORE, KY—Asbury College hosts John Cannon, the first performer in a series of pipe organ performances, Sept. 16 from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in Hughes Auditorium.

Cannon, an Alabama native, studied organ under Francis Angelo, a pupil of world-renowned organist Marcel Dupré and Clarence Waters. Cannon completed a master’s degree in organ performance at Colorado State University in 2003.

In his career, he has held various church positions. These include organist at First Congregational Church of Loveland, Colo., organist and music director at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Estes Park, Colo., and assistant university organist for the University of the South. Cannon is the only assistant organist in the history of the University of the South to serve four years and to accompany the University Choir on tour to England twice.

The Asbury College Pipe Organ Performance Series is the concept of Dr. Mark Schell, professor of music and college organist. The 30-minute recitals are free and open to the public and college community.
