Dr. Rocky Wallace – “Next Door”

April 30, 2014

“But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” – 2 Corinthians 8:7

I learned an important lesson on missional giving during Easter season of 2012, when my wife Denise felt led to dedicate a “30 Pieces of Silver” project at church to the United Methodist Church at West Liberty, Kentucky. Even though this church had been destroyed in March of that spring by a devastating tornado that swept through the eastern part of the state,  I must confess, I did not expect that our congregation would dig deep for this cause, as it seems the ask for help on all fronts never ends.

But when Easter Sunday rolled around, and the special drive was completed, was I ever surprised. Our people had responded by donating a total of over $2200. As the collection jars overflowed at the altar, I was reminded that God touches the hearts of His people to pour out compassion where they can see and relate to an authentic need.

The world is indeed our parish. And often, the need is urgent…right next door.
