Job Title:        Resident Director

Reports to:     Assistant Vice President for Student Life

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Purpose:

The Resident Director (RD) has primary responsibility for the administration of the residential community she is assigned. The RD is responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe, healthy, and nurturing living environment designed to enhance each student’s potential for achieving their individual spiritual, educational, personal, and professional goals. An important part of the position is supporting the ministry and mission of the University and advancing the academic excellence and spiritual vitality of our University and students. Each employee plays an important role in the development of the Christian faith in our students.

 This is an all female dorm and requires a female Resident Director.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide timely communication of significant residence community event to the AVPSD (weekly written report and ongoing oral report as needed).
  • Provide a clean, reasonably well maintained residence community with repairs conducted in a timely manner.
  • Establish a schedule for student workers (Assistant Resident Director (ARD), Resident Assistants (RA), desk workers, etc) to provide for services and supervision of the residence community.
  • Work with other departments in the University (Physical Plant, Business Affairs, etc).
  • Responsible for the general administrative and clerical task related to the management of the residence community.
  • Provide students referrals for community and campus resources, professionals within the community, and other needs.
  • Provide leadership and support for student residence life staff and student spiritual life staff as they develop and implement a spiritual life strategy for the residence community.
  • Assist in planning and implementing the residence hall staff selection and training program.
  • Conduct meetings (at least twice a month) with the ARD and the RAs.
  • Provide support for students on academic probation.
  • Responsible for initial conduct counseling with the residents in his/her residence community.
  • Develop and evaluate programming designed to address the developmental needs of residents.
  • Provide necessary programs and supervision to ensure a living environment that is conducive to spiritual, academic, personal, and professional achievement.
  • Attend all regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Know, value, and accurately communicate to students the communicate standards as outlined in the Handbook for Community Life and The Handbook for Residence Life.
  • Maintain a personal relationship with God through a knowledge of Jesus Christ as personal Savior; be able and willing to speak openly and freely about their relationship and strive to know Him more fully through prayer, reading and meditating upon His Word, and active participation in regular fellowship with other believers. The RDs lifestyle and conduct is expected to be consistent with one who knows Christ as Savior and striving for holy living.

Physical requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift items, up to 25 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time live-in position. For purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act, it is recognized by Reasonable Agreement there may be times when the RD is also engaged in normal private pursuits, such as eating, sleeping, entertaining, and tending to the needs of their own family.  Therefore, it is difficult to determine the exact number of hours an RD will work each week.  It is agreed to by the University and the RD that a typical work week of 45 hours per week is a reasonable number of hours worked per week in order to perform the job of Resident Director and when viewed over a sufficient length of time to render an accurate picture of the work schedule. Permission from the Vice President for Student Life is required to enroll for more than one academic course at any institution of higher education.

Travel:

No travel is expected for this position.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in the field of student personnel, student development, counseling, or related field.
  • Previous experience in residence life preferred.
  • A high degree of proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet functions.
  • Ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse environment, demonstrated leadership, and supervisory abilities are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A committed and dynamic Christian faith is vital with the ability to support the University’s theological position, lifestyle standards and mission.
