Asbury University to Host Songs of the Season Performance

President’s gift to the community features works from Music and English departments

December 1, 2021

WILMORE, Ky.  – Asbury University President Dr. Kevin Brown invites the community to Songs of the Season performance presented by Asbury’s English and Music departments on Friday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hughes Memorial Auditorium. Songs of the Season is a free concert that is a gift to the community and is the same weekend as the iconic Wilmore Old Fashioned Christmas festivities.

“I am honored to extend an invitation to Jessamine County and the surrounding communities to kick-off the Christmas season by attending Asbury’s Songs of the Season, a mix of traditional and creative arrangements by Asbury’s music and English departments,” said Kevin Brown, president of Asbury University.

Directed by Asbury Orchestra Director Dr. Nathan Miller, Songs of the Season is a unique collaboration between the Music and English departments. The Asbury orchestra and chorale will perform along with readings from English faculty members, with the focus being on classic and contemplative Christmas art through music and writing, including a few favorite songs like Silent Night.

“Songs of the Season demonstrates the best of Christmas and Asbury in one event,” said Miller. “It combines a thoughtful reflection on the season with a unique collaboration between the Music and English departments along with a worshipful gathering of a community celebrating the birth of our Lord. This event never ceases to challenge me to think more deeply about the need of our world for the Light of Christ, and to remind of His gracious gifts to us of music and the written word, but more importantly, of His presence with us.”

Songs of the Season will be livestreamed on asbury.edu, thanks to the University’s shift to an upgraded content streaming focus in the fall of 2019. The livestream capabilities were made possible by the 2020 Reunion Gift Project. Thanks to those technology upgrades, the Songs of the Season Christmas concert will not only offer in-person attendance but will livestream to friends of Asbury all around the world.
