School of Education Welcomes New Dean
Asbury University is pleased to announce that Dr. Sherry Powers ’77 has accepted the position of Dean of the School of Education.
Powers comes to Asbury from Western Kentucky University, where she served as Director of the School of Teacher Education and Associate Dean. Her career in education includes classroom experience in Kentucky public schools as well as expertise in reading and literacy education at the university level.
“Dr. Powers is a perfect fit for Asbury University as the new Dean for the School of Education,” said Provost Jon Kulaga. “As an Asbury alum and former member of the Alumni Board and University Board of Trustees, Dr. Powers is a long-time friend of the institution who will be able to ‘hit the ground running’ upon arrival. Dr. Powers brings to her position a long and very distinguished career in higher education and teacher education at the state university level. Her local, state, national and international experience — as well as her expertise in working with state licensure and national accrediting agencies — will be an invaluable resource to the institution.”
Asbury’s School of Education is consistently rated as one of the top teacher education programs in the state of Kentucky and is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). In addition to traditional undergraduate degrees on campus in Wilmore, Ky., Asbury also offers degree completion programs in Wilmore and Orlando, Fla., as well as undergraduate, graduate and Principal Licensure programs online. The School of Education’s focus is on producing “high-definition” teachers and leaders who can design instruction, assess student learning, analyze learners’ work, diagnose teaching and learning gaps and prescribe effectively for improved achievement.
“It is an honor to be selected to serve Asbury University as the Dean of the School of Education,” Powers said. “Asbury University is known across educational circles as an institution that prepares highly qualified educational professionals. I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and students to learn more about Asbury's academic professional education programs, curriculum and student-centered culture.”
