Asbury Professors speak at Ocean City Youth Explosion
WILMORE, KY—It was standing room only when Asbury College Professors Greg Bandy and Devin Brown spoke at the annual Peninsula-Delaware UMC Youth Rally January 10, 2009, in Ocean City, Maryland. Event leaders eventually had to shut the doors to control the crowd. Fortunately, there were some open seats in the second seminar for those unable to get in to the first one.
The Asbury professors’ presentation included Dr. Brown’s dynamic presentation on "The Spiritual Lessons from The Chronicles of Narnia," and “The Storyteller” documentaries created by Asbury media communications students, which tell the stories of how C. S. Lewis wrote “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” and “Prince Caspian.” Prof. Bandy introduced the documentaries in the context of Lewis’ important influence on developing a Christian worldview for today, as well as the emphasis on understanding true vocation as seen in Lewis’ life.
"The ability which the Narnia stories have to touch people's hearts never ceases to amaze me," Dr. Brown said. "After both of our sessions, all sorts of people--young and old--came up and wanted to talk about what these books have meant to them. Lewis understood the incredible power of story and used it to help spread the good news. Many of his readers might never have received the message in any other way."
“The Narnia stories endure because there are powerful themes and deep truths woven throughout these winsome children’s adventures,” added Prof. Bandy. “I don’t know many people who can illuminate these great truths to such a broad audience better than Devin Brown. We’ve packaged an engaging 45-minute live educational experience with multimedia elements that seems to really connect with people of all ages.”
The giant youth rally, attended by more than 4,000 young people, is a regular event at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center each January. This year's rally, called “The Missing Peace,” promised participants "a relevant, transforming message from God for your generation." Christian bands headlining the event included Leeland, Aaron Shust, and 33 Miles.
Dr. Devin Brown is a Lilly Scholar and a member of the English Department at Asbury College. He is the author of Inside Narnia (Baker Books 2005) and Inside Prince Caspian (Baker Books 2008). Last summer he served as the Scholar-in-Residence at The Kilns, the Oxford home of C. S. Lewis.
Professor Greg Bandy teaches in Asbury's Media Communications department and has produced award-winning presentations for The U.S. Department of Justice and Walden Media with Asbury Media Com students. He is also the co-founder of The Highbridge Film Festival.
