WILMORE, KY—Rich Bowen ’92, Web Database Programmer, and Chris J. Davis ’99, Webmaster at the College, recently published technical books. Bowen published his book, “The Definitive Guide to Apache mod_rewrite” and Davis released “Blog Design Solutions” for which he wrote a chapter on WordPress. Both writings were released Feb. 20, 2006.
Bowen’s 160-page book describes managing web sites by creating URLs or web site addresses, which are meaningful and easy to read. It is also important that host web servers manipulate URLs in order to cope with temporarily or permanently relocated resources, prevent attacks by automated worms and control resource access. The Apache mod_rewrite module offers an unparalleled toolset for manipulating URLs. Bowen’s book guides reader’s through configuration and use of the module for a variety of purposes, including basic and conditional rewrites, access control, virtual host maintenance, and proxies.
Davis’ chapter is part of a designers’ guide created to help weblogers or bloggers express themselves visually using some of the more prevalent software programs. In this book, a team of renowned web designers take readers through the ins and outs of putting together great blogs. They get straight to the practical details, showing how to set up a basic blog in some of the world's most popular blogging engines – Movable Type, ExpressionEngine, WordPress, and Textpattern.
Bowen and Davis have been invited to share their research and knowledge with audiences all over the nation and world. Bowen is part of the planning committee and is a presenter for the ApacheCon EU Conference in Ireland in June.
