Asbury Professor Leads Trip To England
Dr. Devin Brown, an English professor at Asbury University, is leading a unique, once-in-a-lifetime trip to England to explore the lives of world-renowned authors C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien… and you (especially Asbury alumni from around the world) are invited!
Brown — a Lily Scholar and winner of Asbury’s Ewbank Award for excellence in teaching — is uniquely qualified to lead the journey from May 12-21, 2015. He has spoken at many international conferences on Lewis and Tolkien and is the author of eight books, including the most recent biographies written on the two authors.
“There are C.S. Lewis scholars ‘who crop up,’ make a splash for a while and then sink back into non-entity,” said Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepson who visited Asbury late last year. “Devin Brown, however, truly is a C.S. Lewis Scholar — and a darned good one at that, as shown in his latest book ‘A Life Observed (A Spiritual Biography of C.S. Lewis)’”
The trip is titled “A Journey with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien” and the all-inclusive price is $4,698 (this includes airfare, lodging, guided tours, entrance fees, breakfast and dinner daily, lecture series and more. All participants will also receive a signed copy of Brown’s upcoming book, “Tolkien: How an Obscure Oxford Professor Wrote the Hobbit and Became the Most Beloved Author of the Century” from Abingdon Press.
Cambridge, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Oxford and London are among the places that will be discovered. The group will not only engage in educational lectures and guided tours, but will also have the opportunity to trace the footsteps of the authors while enjoying Brown’s extensive knowledge and expertise.
“We are going to walk where they walked and visit the colleges they attended as students and where later they were members of the faculty,” Brown said. “We will stop in at the churches where they prayed and worshiped, and we will visit their graves where they are buried. We will even eat at the same pub where they met.”
Brown says he is most excited to share his passion with others in hopes they, too, will fall in love with Lewis and Tolkien. “I hope this kindles a spark for those who visit the Lewis and Tolkien sites to read some of their works that they have not yet read, and to perhaps one day bring others back to show them these awesome places,” he said.
A Belfast pre-tour exploring Lewis and his Irish Heritage is available for an additional $1,648 and will begin May 8.
Note: The trip gives Asbury alumni the opportunity to reconnect and continue their education and each should register with the Asbury host number — #555838/Asbury University.
