Staff Member Honored by Chamber of Commerce
Jason Clayton, director of Asbury’s Center for Career and Calling, recently was named “Member of the Year” by the Jessamine County Chamber of Commerce.
The award was presented by Brian Goettl, 2013 Board President, at the Chamber’s Annual Awards Dinner and Banquet. As Clayton has served on the Board of Directors for just over a year, the award took him completely by surprise.
“I was honored, humbled, and I didn’t have anything prepared to say,” he said, laughing.
To those familiar with Clayton’s work in the community, however, the award will be no surprise at all. During the last year, he has assisted in multiple Chamber initiatives that benefited the community. These included “Helping Hands,” an outreach in partnership with the Nicholasville Salvation Army to assist needy families during the Christmas holiday, and a job skills fair, hosted at Asbury University, for which he was the lead coordinator.
Clayton sees his involvement with the Chamber of Commerce as a way of giving back to the community, as well as an expression of Asbury’s Cornerstone commitments.
“It’s the Stewardship principle,” he said. “It’s exploring the question of how to serve this community where God has planted us, and how to serve it well, because it serves us well. We are a key player in the community, and I’m a big believer that community is made by its people — people make the place.”
