Orchid Ensemble to perform for Artist Series
WILMORE, KY – Asbury University welcomes the musical trio Orchid Ensemble to campus for a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in Hughes Auditorium. Their performance is part of the university’s Artist Series.
The ensemble features Lan Tung on the erhu or Chinese violin, Haiqiong Deng on the zheng or Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard on percussion. The group, which was established in 1997, is based in Vancouver, Canada.
The trio’s music is a unique blend of Chinese instruments and traditions with musical styles such as jazz and instruments such as the African marimba. In this way they create an innovative genre that mixes Asian and Western music.
Their performance will feature music from their CDs, Heartland and Road to Kashgar, with a focus on the latter. It will be preceded by a master class with the ensemble at 3 p.m. in Hughes.
Orchid Ensemble’s performance will be followed by a reception in the lobby of the Kinlaw Library. The reception, which is sponsored by the art department, will also feature artwork from a juried exhibit celebrating the horse and the culture surrounding it.
