My semester abroad in China was one of the best experiences I have ever had. During my time there, I learned so much, and got to experience so many things that I otherwise never would have. In Beijing, I got to see the Great Wall of China, eat amazing food, meet unforgettable people, and make lifelong friends. I learned about a culture that I now very much appreciate, and am even starting a job in Shanghai this coming fall semester as an elementary teacher>

I am so glad I was able to experience China with Asbury’s semester abroad program. We were able to learn so much about the history and culture of the Chinese people. In between studying Mandarin, we took many trips to the local markets and made friends with students from the nearby University. They were so willing to share their world and and introduce us to their way of living, especially through food! We traveled to many of the main sites and historical landmarks of China. I established some life-long friendships with some of the Chinese students there! It was a great opportunity to grow in my faith and ability to share the gospel with others. The beauty and grandeur of China will never be forgotten.

Going halfway around the world to be immersed in another culture where people think very differently from you can be intimidating. However, I took a big step of faith and followed God across the ocean to China. God used the time on the trip to teach me many spiritual lessons as I fervently trusted in Him to lead me. The lesson that impacted me the most was being able to genuinely love people the way Christ commands us. We traveled to a special needs group home where young adults were left to live their lives in isolation after aging out of adoption. I went in with the mind set that I would be telling them their lives had meaning, they were beautifully created, and that there is hope. To my surprise their Christ-filled love poured out on me till I was weeping tears of joy because of the overwhelming beauty found in the lives of young people who had finally been adopted, not by an earthly family, but by our Heavenly Father. As they lifted their voices in prayer, and worship to One who would never abandon them, they poured into me, enabling me to pour out love I previously did not really have. The love I was filled with was then poured out on my peers, homeless people, Muslim college students, monks, other orphans, and people ensnared in false religions. Through my time in China God has reaffirmed the burden He placed on my heart to reach the Chinese, and I never would have gone without taking that first big step of faith.

China has changed my mind about the world. When you learn one thing, you realize that there is so much more to experience. Everything about culture in your mind before you leave changes once you have faced a society that is the complete opposite of your own. At first, you are scared and you don't know what is ahead of you. At the end, you wish you didn't have to leave. I have gotten attached to China and when I came back, I could not stop talking about it. I will always remember my amazing trip to China.
