Golf Tournament to Benefit Asbury Students

God, family and golf: by many accounts, those were the three great loves of Asbury University alum Bob Nelson, Jr. ’81. And though he passed away a few years ago, his legacy continues through those passions and the creative efforts of family and friends.

Nelson was a PGA professional golfer who organized and operated the London Country Club, as well as founding Southside Christian Church in Harrodsburg, Ky., and St. Andrews Methodist Church in Lexington, Ky. He served as General Evangelist of the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church for more than 10 years and preached across the United States and around the world.

After his death, his family decided to endow a scholarship in his honor at Asbury University, where he was a Bible major. Contributions from individuals and a golf tournament in 2011 have put the scholarship fund within putting distance of the amount needed to begin disbursing scholarships to students. With another golf tournament scheduled for Oct. 8, the family anticipates meeting the goal this year.

“Brother Bob loved the game of golf, and the Lord absolutely equipped Bob to use golf to spread the Gospel in the United States and all around the world,” said Rev. Stuart Smith, senior advancement director at Asbury. “The beautiful thing about a scholarship that is endowed is that it will be able to have a lasting impact for generations of students to come. Brother Bob would be so pleased that his loved ones were making sure that other people would have the opportunity to experience what he himself experienced on the campus of Asbury University.”

This year’s tournament will be held Oct. 8 at the Gay Brewer, Jr. Golf Course at Picadome in Lexington. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Myra Blackwelder, former LPGA pro, will conduct a clinic prior to the tournament’s start. To sponsor a hole or play in the tournament, contact Kathy Nelson Chambers at or (513) 403-8277.
