Former Asbury University Athlete Reaches Milestone

Each year, groups of Asbury University’s proud alumni gather in Wilmore to catch up with friends and reminisce about days gone by.   For Helen Winslow ’31 Larabee, there have been more reunions to attend and stories to reminisce about than just about any Asburian in history.

On Saturday, from her home in North Carolina, Larabee celebrated her 102nd birthday.

“I certainly do miss Asbury,” Larabee said. “I loved the people and they were so good to me.”

Larabee received a certificate in Home Economics from Asbury before going on to the University of Kentucky to complete her college education. After obtaining a Master’s Degree, she spent time living and teaching in Cincinnati (Ohio), Raleigh (N.C.) and several smaller towns in North Carolina.

A teacher for 20 years, Larabee recalls, “It was such a long, long time ago (that I taught), but I enjoyed teaching and it was a pleasure to be able to teach others.”

Her husband, Norman Larabee, graduated from Asbury University in 1931 with a degree in history, and two of their children and five of their grandchildren attended Asbury as well, which brings Larabee plenty of pride and joy.

“I enjoyed playing basketball at Asbury,” said Mrs. Larabee, who says some of her fondest college experiences were with her friends on the basketball team. “And I competed in tennis and swimming, too.”

In fact, Larabee’s most recent trip to Asbury came in 2009, when the former basketball player journeyed to Wilmore for the opportunity to see the Luce Center for the first time.

Larabee currently resides in Elizabeth City, N.C., where she enjoys spending time with family and friends. Above all else, however, she credits the Lord for her long and fruitful life.

“The good Lord has guided and directed me,” she says, “and I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have the Lord to take me through the weak places.”
